Quantitative and Qualitative Research

How do you understand the difference between quantitative and qualitative research in Sociology? What application do you think those ideas share with the kind of research you need to do when writing an essay for English class?

  1. In sociology, I understand the difference between the two types of research as quantitative research being strictly objective without bias, whereas qualitative research is more subjective in analyzing certain meanings in collected data. Similarly, when writing an essay for English that requires a claim to be made and evidence found to support the thesis, collecting data and analyzing underlying meanings is crucial in order to strengthen the writing. In the arguments we were assigned, more qualitative research was necessary than quantitative research since the focus of the essay was to be centered around the significance of the work as a whole as we saw it individually.

  2. Quantitative research refers to research that can measured, numerically. Qualitative research is research gathered in depth, it investigates the "how" and "why." Both are used in the sociology discipline. We might use those research methods in English to gather data for a report.

  3. Quantitative research is based on the number whereas the qualitative research deals with the major reason behind the thing while analyzing the data.IN the English writing, in order to make argument, we have to the show the evidence which can be done by collecting data.

  4. I understand the difference between quantitatvie and qualitative research in sociology as simply quantitative research is dealing data in number form and qualitative research is dealing with data in word form.
I feel as if it does not hurt to have both quantitative and qualitative research in an essay for english class. The more information you have to support your essay the better.

  5. I agree with Ashley’s response about the reasons we can apply quantitative and qualitative research to our English papers because more evidence really does provide more support for the thesis of our papers. Without either type of research, our English papers would have less credibility and much less depth to present to our readers. As Grace said, I also believe that the data collected helps strengthen the “how” and “why” for use in making our arguments more convincing.
